Why convert a VW Crafter?
The Crafter is one of the most refined large vans on the UK market. A solid build, planted ride, and a tight turning circle make it ideal for converting into a campervan that's as pleasant to drive on the daily as it is on holiday. It's our most-developed product line - every panel, locker and pod we make for the Crafter has scribes pre-cut to match the body lines, so installation is a lift-and-fit job rather than a measure-and-trim ordeal.
Two distinct chassis generations
The Crafter range splits into two clearly different vans, and the conversion approach varies between them. We make four dedicated kit lines - one for each combination of wheelbase and generation.
Mercedes-derived chassis
2006 – 2017The pre-2017 Crafter shares its underpinnings with the Mercedes Sprinter of the same era. RWD only, with a slightly softer ride than its successor and well-known parts availability through both VW and Mercedes channels. Floor plans tend to work around the rear wheel arches, and our products for this generation are dimensioned to suit.
All-VW chassis
2017+Clean-sheet VW design built on the same chassis as the MAN TGE - functionally identical for fitting purposes. FWD (most common, especially in MWB) or RWD. Adds Crafter-specific extras: dedicated ply lining sized to the new panel shape, Scopema swivel bases that respect the redesigned seat mountings, and CTA smart-kit support for the modern electrical system.
MWB vs LWB - what fits where
MWB
~6.0 mThe Medium Wheelbase Crafter is the more popular conversion base for couples and small families. Easier to park, fits most domestic driveways, with enough floor space for a kitchen, bed and a chair-style toilet setup.
LWB
~6.8 mThe Long Wheelbase adds nearly a metre of usable floor - enough to include a fixed shower cubicle, a longer bed, and a proper rear garage section. Worth the extra metre if you live in the van for extended periods or take more than two people away comfortably.
Finishes and customisation
Every Crafter kit is configurable in colour and worktop combination. We use photo-backed swatches - Slate Grey, Salvia, Harbour, Monument Wood Grain, Willow Green, Hacienda Black and more - so you can see exactly how your kit will look before ordering.
Most builds settle on a combination that ties the locker fronts to the kitchen worktop and contrasts with the bed-box panels. We're happy to set up a specific colour combination for you to view during a measure-up appointment - the best way to compare matte versus gloss finishes, which look quite different in photographs versus real life under shop lighting.
Common questions from Crafter owners
What about the MAN TGE?
Identical chassis to the 2017+ Crafter, identical fit. If you've got a TGE, browse our Crafter 2017+ range above - the same products fit your van without modification.
Can you still fit older 2006-2017 Crafters?
Yes - and we still get plenty of orders for those builds. The older chassis has its own dedicated kit line, sized appropriately for the panel geometry and wheel-arch positions of that generation.
Will your kit fit if my van's been ply-lined elsewhere?
In most cases yes, but it's worth booking a free measure-up so we can confirm. Aftermarket ply lining sometimes uses different thickness panels than ours, which can affect locker mounting heights.
What if I'm not sure which variant I have?
Bring the V5 (logbook) to the measure-up appointment - we'll work out wheelbase, chassis generation and drivetrain on the spot.
